Can I use an ATM (debit) card in ATM machines in Japan?
First, the debit card must have a VISA or MASTERCARD mark on it. Most international ATMs require these providers. Note that there is usually an international fee; to find out what it s, check with your card provider.
Some ATM machines will accept debit cards in Japan. Their popularity is increasing and it will not be difficult for you to find one. We suggest you use the ATM in the post offices or at Citibank. We’ve heard that some students’ cards work well at the ATMs in 7-Eleven stores, but not all. Your student coordinators will be able to show you where these ATM machines are.
Withdrawing money this way is very convenient, and if you get low on money, you can have someone from home deposit more funds into your account.
